The Road Doesn't Bend

driving along in the night on a dark country road where the Milyway exploded
this is the time of the night when my thoughts are all bent like a gun that can't be loaded
going back over the day, did I make a wrong turn when I closed my eyes to listen
wish I could do it again, wish I didn't expect all the people I'd be missin'
all of my life to this day I've been waiting for something
there's always a block in the road that turns out to be nothing

rolling along through space at a relative speed, I feel I could be floating
in this numbing of nerves do I have what it takes to peel off the candy coating
in the blink of an eye I could miss the humbling sight of a shooting star
got no shackles on my legs, now I'm wondering 'bout what I've missed so far
all of my life to this day I've been counting on someone
there's always another excuse and I'm waiting for nothing

opening doors in my mind, leaving the past far behind
god only knows what I'll find
but I won't pretend the road doesn't bend

now with my windshield clean can I see all the things on the road that I need to see
do I know my own role, can I tell that it's all up to me
it's so easy to ignore, and it's easier to be dumbstruck
all I can do is my best, maybe the gods could spare a little luck
then when the fog rolls on in I can trust my direction
and when there's a fork in the road I can trust my selection

opening doors in my mind, leaving the past far behind
god only knows what I'll find
but I won't pretend the road doesn't bend
